Russian Red Hardneck Garlic

Price range: $20.00 through $133.00

Reliable | Late Season | Purple stripe type

Allium sativum

Russian Red garlic boasts a knockout combo of both beauty and reliability. In one of the worst garlic seasons we had it still performed well. It has deep purple stripes and marbling along with constantly producing impressively large heads with deep purple clove wrappers. Russian Red has a strong medium-hot and complex flavor.  Super thankful for our friends who introduced us to this powerhouse variety.

Growing instructions:

When you receive your package, inspect your order right away and contact us with any questions or concerns. Store in a cool, dark place until you are ready to plant. Not in the refrigerator.

How to grow:

Plant 2-4 weeks prior to ground freezing or prior to your coldest time of year. After breaking cloves apart (not peeling), plant cloves root end down (blunt end) 6-9″ apart with row 9″-12″ apart. On our farm we plant our garlic at 9″ apart, rows 9″ apart. Mulch with straw, leaves, or old hay going into the winter.

Harvest and curing

In most climates garlic will be ready early to mid July. Stop watering about 2 weeks prior to harvest. Garlic is ready to harvest when the bottom two sets of leaves are completely dry and when top 5-6 leaves are still 50% green. Pull garlic and hang in a well ventilated area to cure. Cure for 3-4 weeks until the tops are dry. Cut off roots and tops 1.5 ” above heads. Then store in a ventilated container in a cool dark place. Ideal conditions are between 55-65 degrees and 45-60% humidity.
