Liberal Obscuro or obscure liberal red bean produces heavily (liberally) and its beauty and silky sweet flavor is at first obscured or concealed from sight. Perhaps that is why it was given this name in Comayagua, Honduras where it originates from. We believe that these are a varietal of Frijol Rojo de Seda or red silk beans, that are revered for their sweet silky qualities and found in kitchens all over Honduras and Central America.

This beautiful bean kept us enthralled with its ever evolving beauty. It grows as a half runner bean, heavily laden with small bean pods. When drying down, the leaves turned a vibrant yellow then the pods a stunning hot pink to deep purple when fully dry. Pods open up to reveal burgundy red beans.

This bean is well suited to red beans and rice, refried beans, and bean stew.
