Amazingly these ginormous beauties ripen in our short season! Robust plants produce humongous, shiny, scalloped, deep purple eggplants with a squat teardrop shape. Aswad means “black” which is the colloquial term for eggplant in its native Iraq. It is known to be more heat tolerant and drought tolerant. Once it starts to produce we have found it to be very productive. This eggplant has dryer flesh making it a great choice for frying or baking. Works well used in eggplant parmesan, or blistered on the grill or the coals of a fire for baba ganoush or other dishes. An Iraqi heirloom eggplant, Aswad was introduced in the U.S. in the 90s by Iraqi seed saver Aziz Nael. Please check out the work of the Iraqi seed collective who continue to cultivate this variety.
