Champion Collards

Price range: $4.95 through $26.29

Brassica oleracea var. viridis

Versatile Green | Cold and Heat Tolerant | 70 Days

A rich, dark strain that has been our go-to collard variety for year-round production. During mild winters, Champion can produce delicious blue/green leaves throughout the winter. If it does make it through the winter it will produce tender blooming stalks that are eaten like broccoli. A delicacy of the “hunger gap” season, when other vegetables are not yet growing.

Collards are often associated with food traditions of the south and have deep African American roots. It is a very productive, easy to grow, and nutritious green that can be grown in most climates. Planted in early spring, this variety will produce all season long. We feel it’s one of the most under-utilized leafy greens in the kitchen. They are very versatile and can braised with a ham hock, steamed and used as wraps, or an alternative for any hearty green in your favorite dish. Exceptionally high in iron and vitamins A and C. 70 days to maturity.
