Montana Zemo Hardneck Garlic

$10.50$112.50

Easy to peel | Hardy | Hardneck

This hardneck variety produces humungous cloves that are the easiest to peel, in our opinion. Highly recommeded for selling to chefs that are interested in using raw garlic. Montana Zemo has been one of our all star varieties when we have had dry springs managing to produce nice size heads when other varieties never were able to recover. (3 heads is ~.40 lbs)

  • 5-10 cloves per head
  • harneck garlic

Growing instructions:

When you recieved your package inspect your order right away and contact us with any questions or concerns. Store in a cool, dark place until you are ready to plant. Not in the refrigerator.

How to grow:

Plant 2-4 weeks prior to ground freezing or to your coldest time of year. After breaking cloves apart (not peeling), plant cloves root end down (blunt end) 6-9″ apart with row 9″-12″ apart. On our farm we plant our garlic at 9″ apart, rows 9″ apart. Mulch with straw, leaves, or old hay going into the winter.

Harvest and curing

When curly scapes emerge from the stocks cut them off to send energy into the root. Bonus you have a delectible seasonal treat! In most climates garlic will be ready early to mid July. Cut water about 2 weeks prior to harvest. Garlic is ready to harvest when bottom two sets of leaves are completely dry and when top 5-6 leaves are still 50% green. Pull garlic and hang in an well ventelated area to cure. Cure with 3-4 weeks until tops are dry. Cut off roots and tops 1.5 ” above heads. Then store in a ventalated container in a cool dark place. Ideal conditions are between 55-65 degrees and 45-60% humidity.
