Solonum lycopersicum
Taiga tomato is another brilliant addition from independent breeder Karen Olivier of True North Seeds in Victoria, BC. Taiga, along with its sibling Midnight Sun, are part of her True North series bred for flavor, striking bicolor appearance, and cool season production.
A unique beauty, this oxheart shaped tomato is a marbled mix of brick red and green. When cut open, the colors intensify into defined vibrant streaks of green and red. The Taiga is equally as delicious as its sibling, the Midnight Sun, but has a richer, more complex flavor, reminiscent of raisins and chocolate. Very meaty flesh with few seeds. A perfect choice for a tomato sandwich or Caprese salad. Laura Parker, owner of High Desert Seed + Garden, prefers it with a pinch of salt and drizzle of olive oil.
Oxheart tomatoes have a different look and growth habit than other tomatoes. They have potato-like leaves that twist and droop off the plant, giving it a sparse and willowy look. Don’t worry, that is completely normal. To ensure the best production and protection from the sun, we recommend allowing for more than one main stem and minimal pruning.
